As Pittsburgh Power Pop act Radio 45<\/strong><\/em> prepares to release a re-imagination of a song written by Cheap Trick\u2019<\/strong>s<\/em> Robin Zander, we look back on the Clarion University concert forty years ago that helped chart a life path for three of Radio 45<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s four band members \u2014 and would come to define this band’s Power Pop<\/strong> sound\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

40 Years Ago<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Fall of 1983 Cheap Trick<\/a><\/em><\/strong> appeared in concert at Clarion University of Pennsylvania<\/a> (CUP) located in northwestern Pennsylvania. In attendance were three members of the Pittsburgh rock act Radio 45<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Still in school themselves, Gary Bickerstaff<\/strong>, C. Scott Gilbert<\/strong> and Mark Wesesky<\/strong> saw Cheap Trick<\/em><\/strong> up-close in the school’s gymnasium with about 1,500 other people \u2014 mostly students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheap Trick <\/em>charged the University $12,500 for their appearance \u2014 which isn’t bad for 75 minutes worth of work \u2014 even in 1983. They also requested and were served meals for the band and 10 crew members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheap Trick<\/em>‘s contract with CUP was very specific: Stage requirements called for an area of 60′ by 40′ by 5′ high. The University could only provide an area of 40′ by 32′ by 4’ high \u2014 but it worked. And standing about 100 feet in front of that stage were Bickerstaff<\/strong> and Gilbert<\/strong>. Of all of Radio 45<\/em>‘s band members, Cheap Trick<\/em> seems to have had the most profound effect on front-man Bickerstaff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Lasting Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“I would not be a musician today were it not for Cheap Trick.\u201d\u2014 Gary Bickerstaff<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“My best friend in High School went to visit a cousin in California and returned with an 8-track tape of Cheap Trick\u2019s \u201cHeaven Tonight\u201d album.\u201c Bickerstaff<\/strong> shared. \u201dI was familiar with the Live at Budokan hits from the radio \u2014 but hearing that full album changed my life.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPop melodies with rock guitars (what I would later learn is called Power Pop) sent me on a journey that would define my life in music. I would not be a musician today were it not for Cheap Trick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bickerstaff<\/strong> continued, \u201cI once heard that Cheap Trick<\/strong> was John Lennon\u2019<\/strong>s favorite band. Other than The Beatles<\/strong>, they are mine.  Oh, and that guy is still my best friend\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the show Gilbert<\/strong> hung out by the band’s tour bus an had the opportunity to talk with the band’s bass player, Jon Brant<\/em>, who stepped into the position of bass player after sex symbol Tom Petersson<\/em> left the group in 1981 (only to return in 1989). Gilbert<\/strong> hung out by a lot of tour buses and talked to a lot <\/em>of bass players back in those days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be Careful What You Wish For<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“A bass player myself, I asked their bass player (Brant) how did you get this gig? …with this band???” Gilbert<\/strong> asked wide-eyed and semi-star-struck, “Did you play scales everyday and practice like crazy?!?!” to which Brant replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No, I partied every night and chased women…”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not exactly sound advice<\/em> for a young, impressionable musician. But it was 1983, and the whole “drugs, sex and rock and roll” vibe from the 1960’s was still a close memory for many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That made me respect Gene Simmons (KISS) even more”, Gilbert<\/strong> continued, “as at least that guy Rock and Rolled All Night<\/a> and saved the partying for daytime…”<\/p>\n\n\n

Wesesky<\/strong> was there to see Cheap Trick as well, although he was wearing a Blue Oyster Cult<\/a><\/em> hat that night. Wesesky<\/strong> is a huge Cheap Trick<\/em> fan. “Back in ’79 one of my best friends cranked up Cheap Trick\u2019s Live at Budokan album on his brother\u2019s stereo, and I got the album that weekend!” said Wesesky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to mastering the drum chops of Cheap Trick<\/em> drummer Bun E. Carlos<\/a><\/em>, Wesesky<\/strong> actually looks<\/em> like Bun E. Carlos<\/a><\/em> in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wesesky<\/strong> was there too, although he was wearing a Blue Oyster Cult<\/a><\/em> hat that night…<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“One day I hope that someone\u2019s looking to start a Cheap Trick tribute band and needs a drummer.” Wesesky continued, “I\u2019m just gonna show up, and when they see me lookin like Bun, they\u2019ll just say ‘We don\u2019t care how good you are on the drums! You\u2019re it!’\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About the 4th Member?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cheap Trick<\/em>, and other rock bands from that era, shaped the musical direction of all four members of Radio 45<\/em>, even though Radio 45<\/em>‘s Aaron Greer<\/strong> was too young to catch that concert at Clarion University. In 1983 Greer<\/strong> was in 1st grade at Harrison Park Elementary School in Harrison City, PA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the youngest member of Radio 45, Greer<\/strong> is an 80’s music powerhouse guitar player \u2014 and often pays homage to Eddy Van Halen’s signature guitar solo Eruption<\/em> at Radio 45 shows. But when the band considered re-working this classic Cheap Trick<\/em> tune, Greer<\/strong> had not yet had the opportunity to go deep with Cheap Trick<\/em> \u2014 just yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I didn\u2019t know this song (I Can’t Take It) until about two months ago, but I love it, and I\u2019m starting to really dig Cheap Trick<\/em> too.” said Greer<\/strong>. “They\u2019re definitely more than I Want You To Want Me<\/em> and Surrender<\/em>…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Music from Radio 45<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As Cheap Trick fans themselves (old and new) Radio 45<\/em> is excited about their re-imagination of the Cheap Trick<\/em> single “I Can’t Take It”. The song was originally released in 1983 as the second single from their seventh studio album Next Position Please<\/em>. It was written by Robin Zander<\/em> and produced by Todd Rundgren<\/em>. It failed to chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radio 45<\/em><\/strong> has been opening their shows with their shiny new version of “I Can’t Take It” \u2014 and it makes an immediate statement with audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
